Tiger Art: Painting the Stripes

Born in an Indian rajput family, artist Ajay Singh Peelwa grew up in a surrounding of landowners and his ancestors were hunters in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Ajay’s creative soul was much different from his forefathers where he uses his talent of art to preserve the last remaining flora & fauna in the country.

He started painting at a tender age of three and has always been fond of wildlife especially tigers. When as a student at Mayo College, Ajmer, he started capturing animals on canvas. As capturing wildlife on canvas was difficult he visited many national parks and reserves to see wildlife and study their behaviour which helped him in his paintings.  He gives a varied impression of wildlife and showcases animals in vivid moods.  At school, he fine tuned his talent, he learnt to grind his own pigments by making his own colours from vegetables and rocks pieces. This is where he started mixing to experiment with new mediums.

None of the mediums satisfied Ajay till he experimented with a new and different medium called cellulosic paints. These paints are used to paint cars and motorcycles, now created art. Since canvas couldn’t support the cellulosic paint, Ajay used compressed boards to paint on.. He found this technique very fascinating and the result satisfied his artistic soul.

Through his painting exhibitions on wildlife, he tries to bring awareness to the masses and especially to the authorities and people concerned.  As Ajay explains ”Tigers are on a verge of extinction, if proper steps are not taken to save them, the whole ecosystem, their forests will collapse  - as its the tiger which is the top apex predator of our forests. If we save the tiger , we indirectly save the forest, the water systems and the river’s that originate from these wilderness”.

He has had many solo and group exhibitions across the world and has been a part of various collections. Ajay was invited by Mr. George Archibald, founder, International Cranes Foundation Wisconsin, US to make paintings on cranes for a group show which were displayed at various galleries around the world. Many important personalities have inaugurated his exhibitions from Dr Karan Singh of Kashmir, Late Rajmata Gayatri Devi  of Jaipur, Arvind Singh of Mewar, Uddhav Thackeray, Raj Singh Dungarpur to name a few.

Presently his painting exhibition is running at the world famous Sarlar Jung Museum, Hyderabad.  His aim is to keep doing artwork on wildlife and help save species through his talent.
